Changes at this school to the physical environment and staffing levels in Year 1 supported a shift in the balance of child-initiated and adult-directed learning. There is now a much more gradual shift from predominantly child-initiated learning in Reception, with significant time allocated to supporting such learning in Year 1, and a smaller proportion of the week devoted to such activities in Year 2.
